After talking to my Mom today she decided that it would be a good idea to have a driveway put in (a circular drive) and a parking spot for an RV with an electrical hook-up. This way she could rent an RV while the cabin was being worked on, and those of us who have RVs could also stay at the cabin. I will be looking for an excavator to do the work, hopefully before Mom arrives.
We also discussed whether to keep any or some of the original building, if it's worth the effort that it will take to save it, or if it should all be replaced. Much of it depends on the cost involved with each alternative, the amount of effort we would have to put in and whether the family would be willing and able to do that work.
In the past, contractors that have been consulted have said that certain parts of the cabin have rotted out, and the logs could be re-chinked and perhaps treated in some way and we could do this ourselves.
Our question to the family is, how much do you care about the main cabin? Would you be willing to put in any time on re-doing it ourselves, and if so, how much time? Would you want to see it demolished and replaced with a new (log preferably) building?
As for myself, I do like the old building, but I am not sure that I will have the time it would take to do the physical labor. It depends on how many of us there are and what we have to do exactly. Right now I am not working, but when I do get a job I doubt I'll have vacation for awhile, if I get any at all. So I am leery about making promises for next summer.
